To Tell Stories
Athough tunesmith Kelly Joe Phelps began his career as a jazz and experimental
musician he plays, sings and writes the Blues with more conviction than
most contemporary Blues artists, influenced by the likes of Robert Pete
Williams and Mississippi Fred McDowell. Kelly has cemented his reputation
as one of the few great modern storytellers, over the years creating
an individual sound, which is both mystical and inspirational, no more
evident than on his 2006 Rounder debut “'Tunesmith Retrofit”.
As “Tunesmith Retrofit” sees Kelly reaching out to a larger
audience, Blues Matters! felt it was time we reached out also…
“One of my musical goals has always been trying to understand
my particular musical influences to the point that I can absorb them,
identify with them, have them project through me cohesively in combination
with whatever other ideas may exist outside of these. This new record
is pointed toward a broader pallet, I think, than previous. Hence tributes
to Dave Van Ronk, and Chris Whitley, and three instrumentals.” Kelly Joe Phelps Website, www.kellyjoephelps.net

The CANADIAN TENORS, selected following an 8 month
cross-Canada casting call, are among Canada’s top lyric tenors. Their solo
careers have taken them from Chanticleer to Carnegie Hall. Recently, they performed before a crowd of
50,000 in Toronto alongside reknown
artists such as David Foster, Jann Arden, Natalie McMaster and Deborah
Cox.
Combining their stunning stage presence, electrifying charm and extreme talent,
they will perform favourites from the classics, opera, cross-over, folk and the
world’s most beloved songs in a concert not to be forgotten. The Canadian Tenors are taking the country
by storm and promise to appeal to everyone, including those who don’t know
their arias from their elbows.
Sat October 13 at Southwood Bethany and Rufus
"Unbelievable!"
is the word most used by audiences when first hearing Bethany &
Rufus, whose cello and voice duo breaks new musical ground, sliding
with seamless ease between groove, jazz and a gritty, unvarnished
approach to traditional folk music. "900
MILES", the duo's debut CD, blends Bethany’s hauntingly
beautiful -- but sometimes explosively powerful -- voice with the
mind-blowing, genre-bending cello playing of Rufus Cappadocia. Bethany
& Rufus have somehow managed to render timeless songs; such
as 900 Miles, East Virginia, and St. James
Infirmary; with a freshness and vitality that reviewers have
found "simply astonishing", pushing the boundaries of
American roots music far into unexpected territory where intense
groove meets sweet, heartbreaking soulBethany and Rufus Website Bethany and Rufus on MySpace

something of a latter-day Canadian poet laureate.” Greg Quill, the Toronto Star

“Miguel de la Bastide website Miguel de la Bastide online Bio:
Miguel de la Bastide has been involved with flamenco for over 25 years.
He is one of the few guitarists outside of Spain, who has mastered the
techniques and the knowledge of the flamenco guitar. An incredible
soloist, he also excels as an accompanist and as a composer. He
possesses a rare combination of explosive technique with a unique
sensitivity to the flamenco dance and song. A native of San Fernando,
Trinidad, Miguel immigrated to Canada at the age of eighteen and began
an intensive study of flamenco.
Clive Carroll website www.clivecarroll.co.uk myspace Clive Carroll Music Bio:
Clive Carroll was recently described as “ the best and most original
young acoustic guitar player and composer in Britain ” (Acoustic Guitar
Magazine).
Clive was born on April 8, 1975 and has been immersed in a diverse
range of music ever since. His mother plays the button accordian and
sings traditional Irish ballads. His father is an accomplished bodhran
player, banjo player, and instrument maker. Putting his considerable
skill to use when Clive was little more than eighteen months old, his
father made him his first banjo. By the age of ten, Clive was
performing regularly with his family band, and as a soloist. At the age
of twelve, Clive took up the guitar. Only eleven years later, in the
summer of 1998, he achieved a 1st Class Honours degree in Classical
Guitar & Composition from Trinity College of Music, London.

Saturday Feb 2, 2008, 8:00pm Jack Semple tribute to Gordon Lightfoot at Southwood United Church 10690 Elbow Dr SW
Jack Semple WebsiteAs a teen, guitarist and singer Jack Semple was “obsessed” with the music of Gordon Lightfoot.
“I bought all of his albums and I listened to them over and over. I went to see him live every chance I could,” said Semple.
“I practically learned how to play the guitar listening to his music, because it worked so well on the acoustic.” Thursday Feb 21 Kiran Ahluwalia

drone of the tanpura rounds out the ensemble’s beautiful sound.
Friday March 07, 2008 Connie Kaldor at Southwood United Church 10690 Elbow Dr SW SOLD OUT
"Just when you think you’ve got it all figured out, something roars in and it turns you about."
Connie Kaldor wrote this and more about the unexpected twists and turns of life and love for her latest album Love is a Truck.
She could well have been writing about her personal artistic
complexities. Music pundits have tried to define the essence of the
prairie-born acoustic performer for over two decades but even the most
eloquent have fallen short of perfection.
Fact
is, Connie Kaldor is a performer without borders. A contradiction in
terms. She is a Juno-award winning singer who has flourished on the
folk music scene for over two decades yet her repertoire of original
material blurs musical boundaries, embracing elements of gospel, rock,
country and western, folk, blue grass and adult contemporary. www.conniekaldor.com
Saturday March 22, 2008 the return of Battlefield Band at Southwood United Church 10690 Elbow Dr SW. Opening for the Battlefield Band will be Seancarra featuring Chris Daniels, Barbara Rose Olorenshaw and Jay Daniels
Inspired by their rich heritage of Celtic music
and fired by the strength of today's Scottish Cultural scene, which indeed they
have done much to create and fuel, Battlefield Band perform a music of rare
passion and joy under the banner "Forward With Scotland's Past".
Refusing to be limited musically by suffocating antiquarianism or the 'music
business', they have mixed the old songs with new self-penned material, playing
them on a unique fusion of ancient and modern instruments - bagpipe, fiddle, synthesiser,
guitar, cittern, flute, bodhran and accordion. Named after the Glasgow suburb of Battlefield,
where the group was formed by four student friends, Battlefield Band have been
on the world’s roads for just on 30 years now, distilling their own unique form
of the Scottish spirit and bottling it in concert and onto disc. They have broken down barriers and pioneered
many new directions, which others have followed. Angry, joyful, raucous,
contemplative, their music is most importantly - accessible to all.
After 30 years they still lead the way for
Scottish music - all the time introducing new musicians, new music; always
involving their ever widening audience, as they travel the world. As one recent
reviewer said: "The Battlefield Band is turning into a national treasure,
and exemplifies the ongoing nature of Scottish musical tradition".

Frequently referred to as the "man

covered by dozens of artists worldwide, including Emmylou
Harris, Christy Moore, Mary Black, Denny Doherty, Murray
McLauchlan, Valdy, John McDermott, Terry Kelly, Prairie

recently, classical soprano Hayley Westenra. Chuck Brodsky: This down to earth musical storyteller, with his dry, barb-witted
social commentary combined with a deep underlying compassion, knows
that the best stories are the little things in the lives of everyday
people trying to muddle through with some grace. His great gift as a
writer is to infuse these stories with humanity and humor, making them
resonate profoundly with his listeners. His spoken introductions to his
songs can be as spellbinding as his colorful lyrics, which he brings to
life with a well-travelled voice and a delivery that's natural and
conversational. His groove-oriented strumming and fingerpicking draw on
influences from the mountains of western North Carolina where he now
lives, and from lots of different good old traditional folk stuff of
all kinds. Friday April 4, 2008 John Boutte at Southwood United Church 10690 Elbow Dr SW
Bayou-blended torch jazz, aching soul and African-American gospel from the heart and soul of New Orleans.
Who is New
Orleans vocalist John Boutte?
Think of Nat
Cole, and then of Jackie Wilson, and then of Marvin Gaye, and then of
Sam Cooke, Joe Williams and Jimmy Scott. Not of them actually, but of
the moods that surrounded them, and especially of their audiences. Think
of the way they treated an audience, of the way they read the room. Think
of how the audience felt about themselves on the way home. Then treat
yourself to the music of John Boutte. For More information on John Boutte including a couple of videos, check out:
